What is Engineering Design and the Engineering Design Process?

Requires students to engage in an experience outside of an MDes course or studio where they apply what they have learned in a broader context. Experience typically takes place in the summer between the Spring and Fall semesters and is uniquely defined to align with students’ interests and career goals. The Senior Design Course offers a unique opportunity for students to identify a human or societal problem, and apply the technical skills learned throughout their studies to engineer novel solutions. The first day of the Hackathon focused on six projects where students refined “problem definitions”, crafted need statements and began brainstorming potential solutions for those projects. They were broken up into teams that worked on low-fidelity prototypes to visualize their solutions, with some teams even creating prototypes using Arduino microcontrollers and rapid prototyping tools. These and other problems demand a deep and systems-level understanding of the underlying problem architecture, which in turn enables innovative, multi-faceted solutions that transcend disciplines and scales.
